If Gaitana had racked up her current record while running in the U. S. for the past five years, there's no telling how much money the First Dude filly might have put in the bank. But the 6-year-old mare is campaigning in Puerto Rico, home of some of the cheapest purses in the Americas.
After winning at Camarero this week, Puerto Rican-bred Gaitana raised her record to an imposing 13-9-8 in 48 starts, but her earnings are a mere $64,289. In 2019 alone, she's 4-2-1 in 10 starts with earnings of just $17,500.
In her latest, at seven furlongs, Gaitana broke on top and was head-and-head for the lead early, but she poured it on in the stretch to score by 5 1/2 lengths. In a field of six, she paid a generous $15.20.
