Mama Joyce wins!
Published: Tuesday, September 19, 2017

Mama Joyce beat open company in the $50,000 Sea of Grass Stakes, a main-track mile contest for older fillies and mares who have claiming races in their past performances.

The 4-year-old Mama Joyce is a Donald Dizney homebred trained by Ralph Nicks who was registering her seventh win in 16 races with three seconds and two thirds.

Mama Joyce went through a series of claims before rejoining the Dizney-Nicks team when taken out of a $40,000 claimer at Belmont in June. The First Dude filly won at the Sea of Grass’ course and distance in August against $62,000 optional-claimer company in her next start and based largely upon that showing she went off at 4-5 in the stakes.

Running midpack behind fractions of :25.76 and :49.08, she challenged when given her cue on the turn and came away easily, winning by four lengths in 1:38.89 over a fast track.

She paid $3.60 and boosted her earnings to $312,094.

She was produced by the Gone West mare Harbin.

Lirica was second, 1½ lengths ahead of She Takes Heart.
