Alexandra's Joy's Gulfstream Score Defies Morning Line
Published: Monday, May 20, 2019

Never has a morning line been further off than in the third race at Gulfstream Park yesterday. Alexandra's Joy, a daughter of First Dude with Jose Batista aboard, was listed at 20-1 in the line. But by the time they sprung the gate for the 'about' 7 1/2-furlong race on the grass, the 5-year-old mare was sitting on the tote board at 3-1. She more than justified the price.

Batista settled Alexandra's Joy in second place, and she stalked the pacesetter until the quarter pole. Then she went after the leader and took over entering the stretch, opening up by 3 1/2 lengths midway down the lane. Then she coasted to the wire to win by 1 3/4 lengths - paying just $8.

Alexandra's Joy became First Dude's 37th winner this year, best of any Florida sire, and his eighth in the past nine days, while earning a check for $11,600.
