In her first career start, Raining Sunshine finished a solid third behind Sophisticurl and Frankly My Dear, both entered in Gulfstream Park's Desert Vixen Stakes two days ago. So it was no surprise that the daughter of First Dude went off at 6/5 yesterday in a $55,000 maiden special at 5 1/2 furlongs.
Experiencing no problem competing in the rain over a sloppy track, Raining Sunshine lived up to the public's confidence under Hall of Fame rider Edgar Prado. She was off fourth down the backstretch, made a bold move to nail the leaders on the turn, and coasted away down the lane to score by nearly six lengths.
Raining Sunshine became First Dude's Florida-leading 41st winner this year and second of the juvenile variety. The victory was worth $36,000 and a $4,000 breeder's award for owner/breeder Marti Haught, owner of the Tack Shack in Ocala.
