At 5, There and Back May Be Ready to Reach Full Potential
Published: Friday, March 20, 2020

If he hadn't been beset by injuries his entire career, there's no telling just how good There and Back might have been. As it is, the 5-year-old First Dude made just the fourth start of his career yesterday in a $46,000 allowance optional claimer at Fair Grounds, getting his second victory; his record in those four races is 2-1-0.

David Dizney bred There and Back, who went through the ring at the 2017 OBS June sale of 2-year-olds, with David winning a bidding war at $400,000 on behalf of himself, his father and other partners.

There and Back made a winning debut at Santa Anita in June of 2018 campaigning in the name of the partnership - Byerley Turk Racing. He didn't run again until 10 months later, getting a third at Santa Anita. Then it was another enforced vacation until Feb. 20, when he was fourth in his return at Fair Grounds.

Yesterday, racing six furlongs, the 5-year-old chased a fast pace (:21.60, :45.03) in third, closed in on the turn, and when Florent Geroux let him loose, he took the lead in the stretch and held on late for a nose victory in 1:10.03. The $27,600 check boosted his earnings to $72,300, and he became the 20th winner for First Dude this season, easily best among Florida sires.
