Baby Ice Began Slowly, But She's on a Roll Now
Published: Monday, September 14, 2020

To paint Baby Ice as a late bloomer would be a gross understatement. The 6-year-old daughter of First Dude didn't make her career debut until May 27 of 2018 at the age of four. Furthermore, she didn't finish in the top three through her first eight races, finally winning in race No. 9 in October and beginning a new chapter in her career.

At Gulfstream Park yesterday, Baby Ice continued her great turnaround, scoring an eye-catching victory and raising her lifetime record to 6-6-5 in 32 starts. The winner's check of $11,700 increased her earnings to $124,815. In 2020 alone, she's 3-3-2 in 10 starts with earnings of $51,970.

Baby Ice's latest victory came with Cristian Torres aboard. He broke her out quickly from the rail, then eased her back to third, about four lengths behind the pace-setter. He let her roll on the turn and she was in front by the time they hit the top of the stretch, then she drew off to win by 3 1/2 lengths in 1:12.30 for the six furlongs. With the check, First Dude is just about $60,000 away from reaching $18 million in career progeny earnings.

First Dude also had a winner in Japan, with Nansei Laurel capturing an allowance race and earning a check for $15,054. The 3-year-old colt was bred by Ocalan Tom McCrocklin and was a $100,000 OBS March 2-year-old purchased by Kiyoshi Ikeda in 2019.
