Bahamian Squall Gelding Asserts Himself in Gulfstream Park Sprint
Published: Sunday, May 10, 2020

When Assertiko broke his maiden in his career debut at Gulfstream Park last August, he received an 'E' speed rating of 64 from Equibase. The improvement made by the son of Bahamian Squall became apparent yesterday when he scored his second victory for co-owners David Romanik and Ron Spatz and received an 83 from Equibase.

The 3-year-old gelding bred by SCF Inc. paid $25.40 and earned a check for $12,300, boosting his eight-race total to $51,580 for his partners. Romanik is a former long-time attorney for Gulfstream and Spatz is a long-time Gulfstream trainer.

Miguel Vasquez put Assertiko in a perfect stalking position down the backstretch in the six-furlong race, following quick fractions of :22.52 and :45.55 set by favored Louie's Kingdom with leading rider Irad Ortiz Jr. Vasquez sent the gelding after the lead on the turn and they caught the 4/5 shot at the top of the stretch, then outgamed him to the wire by nearly two lengths in a final time of 1:11.16. It was another 3 3/4 lengths back to the third finisher.
