Buddy's Babe Breaks Her Maiden on Mountaineer Grass
Published: Thursday, May 23, 2019

First Dude's 38th winner of 2019 is a rare West Virginia-bred, appropriately hitting the winner's circle last night at Mountaineer Racetrack and Casino. Buddy's Babe, bred by Jonathan Dean, owner of Daystar Farm west of Ocala, broke her maiden in a maiden special weight test at a flat mile on the grass under Eddie Jurado.

The 3-year-old filly broke on top from the No. 2 post, then Jurado settled her on the rail about three lengths behind the pacesetters. Buddy's Babe moved up toward the leaders on the final turn, angled off the rail heading into the stretch, went by the leader in mid-stretch and held off Tijuana Dancer by a head at the wire. She was clocked in 1:37.33 and earned $8,990 for the victory.

First Dude now has a three-up lead in the winner's column among Florida's active sires.
