Cairenn moved into the No. 6 spot on First Dude's money-earnings list via a third-place finish yesterday in the Gr. III, $100,000 Rampart Stakes at Gulfstream Park.
A check for $9,500 raised the earnings of the 5-year-old mare to $342,910 on a solid record of 5-6-7 in 22 starts. A former black-type winner, she now has finished third in three Gr. III stakes. It was Cairenn's first start in her new barn after she was purchased for $180,000 by William Simon at last month's Keeneland sale.
With Sophie Doyle riding, Cairenn was off ninth in the 10-horse field racing a flat mile and she remained there through the first half. On the turn, she uncorked a powerful three-wide move, but she was pushed into the six path by the filly inside her just before straightening out for home. She continued to close, but the incident cost her several lengths.
