First Dude Veterans Defy All the Odds - Almost
Published: Wednesday, January 29, 2020

What would be the Las Vegas odds that two horses by the same sire, each racing six furlongs at tracks in neighboring states on the same day - 19 minutes apart - would each go off at $14.20-1, win, and pay $30.40? That scenario came within a bare nose of becoming a reality yesterday via a pair of First Dude veterans, the 7-year-old gelding Alex the Dude at Mahoning Valley and the 5-year-old mare Royalty For Life at Parx Racing.

At 3:42 p. m., Alex the Dude left the gate in Ohio with Luis Perez, sat near the rear of the pack early, then made a six-wide move on the turn and ran down the leaders to win by a neck, clocked in 1:13.31. The $6,728 check raised his lifetime earnings to $142,305 on a record of 13-9-5 in 59 starts, with the 13 victories being the most by any son or daughter of First Dude. He paid the aforementioned $30.40.

Nineteen minutes later, Royalty For Life shot into the lead in Pennsylvania and led every step of the way until the last, being nailed at the wire by a nose. The race went in 1:13.64 and Royalty For Life's backers were deprived of their $30.40 payoff. She earned $4,800 for second and is 7-2-1 in 18 starts with earnings of $125,360.

First Dude has had three winners in the last three days, six in all in January, and his progeny earnings have reached $160,080.
