First Dude Back on Top on Florida's Sire List
Published: Saturday, August 24, 2019

First Dude is on another exceptional roll, with his two winners yesterday giving him seven in the last eight days and vaulting him back into the lead on Florida's general sire list by $50,000.

Marcelino made it three victories in a row at Gulfstream Park, and the $12,600 winner's check raised his total to $66,010. The much-improved 3-year-old gelding prevailed by a neck in a photo after a head-and-head battle for the entire five furlongs on the grass, which went in :55.66. His 'e' ratings on Equibase for the three victories are 86-88-92, the three best of his career.

Several hours later, First Star proved that her debut victory was no fluke, the 3-year-old filly winning an allowance optional claimer at Del Mar under Drayden Van Dyke and collecting $38,400, which raised her earnings for the two races to $75,000. She has already proven to be a major bargain for trainer Ron Ellis, the TVG analyst who paid $35,000 for her at the Timonium 2-year-old sale last year.

First Star went to the first turn five wide in the one-mile race and Van Dyke was never able to maneuver her close to the inside the rest of the way. At one point on the backstretch she dropped back to near-last, but a monster run on the final turn, and an explosive run through the lane, culminated in a 1 3/4-length victory. The filly bred by Catherine Ann Perez and Richard A. Heysek has posted 'e' ratings of 93 and 97.

First Dude now leads Florida's sires in four important categories - 58 winners, 27 repeat winners, $2,358,822 in earnings, and three stakes-winners.
