First Dude is less than $26,000 away from passing the $18 million mark in career progeny earnings after the maiden-breaking score of Wilshire Diamond at Indiana Grand yesterday. With runners scheduled to compete today at five tracks, with a little good fortune the son of Stephen Got Even could reach the milestone by this evening.
Wilshire Diamond, bred by Donald Dizney, was ridden by Rodney Prescott in the race at 7 1/2 furlongs on the turf. Away in fifth place, the 3-year-old gelding fell a good 8 to 10 lengths behind racing down the backstretch. Prescott revved him up coming to the turn and Wilshire Diamond closed the huge gap in a matter of seconds and was on even terms with 9/5 favorite Perfect Seeker as they headed down the stretch.
With 100 yards to go, Wilshire Diamond took the lead and drew off to win by two lengths, becoming First Dude's Florida-leading 50th winner of 2020. He paid $7 and earned a check for $7,200 while helping widen the gap between his sire and Brethren in the battle for second place on Florida's leading sire list.
