First Dude Colt Has Been There, And Now He's Back
Published: Wednesday, March 6, 2019

In 2014, David Dizney bred his Kris S. mare, Natalie's Moment, to First Dude and named the resultant foal There and Back. Natalie's Moment had already produced four foals, including Sola Gratia, a 6-time winner who finished second in the Ta Wee Stakes at Gulfstream Park and earned $177,984, and Four Aria, a seven-time winner and earner of $147,065.

There and Back was entered in the OBS June 2-year-old sale in 2017, and David Dizney bought her back for $400,000 for a syndicate, Byerley Turk Racing. The colt didn't make it to the races until a year later, when he showed up for a $60,035 maiden special at Santa Anita for trainer Bob Baffert. With Martin Garcia aboard, and at odds of 7/5, There and Back went wire-to-wire in the 6 1/2-furlong race, flying past the poles in :22.04, :44.75 and 1:09.22 en route to a 2 1/4-length victory in 1:15.91.

An injury then sent the colt to the sidelines, but There and Back returned to the work tab for Baffert on Jan. 9, when he worked 3 furlongs in :38.20, sixth best of 10 that day. Since then, the colt has worked five more times and Baffert has him ready to roll. On Feb. 19, he went 5 furlongs in :59.60, second best of 22 works, and on Feb.27, he turned in a bullet work of :59.80, best of 16.

David Dizney's colt has been there, and he certainly looks like he's back.
