First Dude Mare: Second Start, First Victory - at Age 5
Published: Saturday, April 20, 2019

First Dude gained winner No. 25 of  2019 at Santa Anita yesterday, and it just might be the most bizarre situation concerning any of his 454 runners who have reached the winner's circle. Caracortada is a 5-year-old mare who sold for $120,000 at the 2016 OBS March sale. Yet, this was just her second career start.

Her first start came at Santa Anita less than three weeks earlier, in a maiden race where she finished third as the 9/5 favorite. This time, Caracortada went off as the third choice at 5/2 with Martin Garcia riding. Garcia settled her right off the leader in the 5 1/2-furlong race, and when he asked her for run, she took the lead on the turn and was best in the stretch, scoring by 1 1/4 lengths. The victory was worth $12,100.
