First Dude currently has 16 runners in his $200,000-plus club, but several more are approaching that milestone. Worth Avenue inched a step closer to joining the club yesterday with a convincing victory racing 6 1/2 furlongs at Gulfstream Park.
The 6-year-old mare bred by Karen Blaho was eased back by Miguel Vasquez leaving the gate and she settled in about eight lengths behind the pack in the two-path down the backstretch. She remained there until the turn when Vasquez let her loose and when they reached the top of the stretch, Worth Avenue had already run over the leaders. From there to the finish it was no contest and she widened her margin down the lane, winning by nearly three lengths in 1:17.21 and paying $10.80.
Worth Avenue has started 30 times and racked up a record of 6-8-3, and the $13,600 to the winner boosted her earnings to $189,923. First Dude moved past Brethren back into second place on Florida's sire list with earnings of $1,319,649.
