First Star 2nd in Gr. II, $250,000 Lexus Raven Run
Published: Sunday, October 20, 2019

First Star, the 3-year-old First Dude filly who had won her initial two starts at Del Mar, became her sire's sixth stakes-placed runner of 2019 yesterday with a solid runner-up performance in the $250,000, Gr. II Lexus Raven Run Stakes at Keeneland.

California trainer and TVG racing analyst Ron Ellis purchased First Star for $35,000 for owners Catherine Ann Perez and Richard Allan Heysek at Timonium last year and she more than repaid them by collecting $75,000 in her two Del Mar victories. She added another $50,000 yesterday for a total of $125,000.

Drayden Van Dyke settled First Star in fourth place on the outside down the backstretch in the seven-furlong race, and she made a bold move on the turn to range up alongside the three leaders. She took the lead entering the stretch, but was unable to hold off a flying Bell's the One, who went on to score by 1 1/4 lengths. The clocking of 1:22.97 is just 1 3/5ths off the track record of 1:21.32.

First Dude is only $45,000 away from reaching $3 million in 2019 progeny earnings.
