First Star Lights Up Del Mar Tote Board for TVG Analyst
Published: Sunday, July 21, 2019

It isn't often that California's handicappers make a serious mistake on a Ron Ellis runner, but it happened at Del Mar yesterday with a first-time starter by First Dude from the barn of the trainer/TVG analyst. Despite a series of solid works, First Star's odds climbed steadily as post time approached for the 6 1/2-furlong maiden special with a purse of $62,053.

The 3-year-old filly got off to a good start with Drayden Van Dyke, who tucked her in on the rail down the backstretch, about three lengths off the pace set by 8-1 Sunny Dale. Heading into the stretch, Van Dyke took her off the rail, but quickly sent her back to the inside and First Star ran down the leader with a powerful run, scoring by three-quarters of a length. The $35,000 Timonium 2-year-old became winner No. 54 for First Dude this year, while earning a check for $36,600 and rewarding the faithful to the tune of $56.80.
