Kairos Relishes Surface Switch, Romps at Parx Racing
Published: Wednesday, June 19, 2019

On a light racing day around the country, First Dude had just one runner scheduled to compete Tuesday - at Parx Racing. The runner, Kairos, came from out of the clouds to score his second victory in his last three starts.

The 3-year-old gelding bred by David Dizney had broken his maiden two races back going one mile on the main track and paid $47.80. Sharp handicappers no doubt picked up on it when yesterday's test originally set for 7 1/2 furlongs on the turf course was taken off the grass and switched to the one-mile distance.

Kairos, listed at 20-1 in the morning line but sent off at 14-1, was off slowly under Lucas Berticelli and languished more than 11 lengths off the pace heading down the backstretch. The rider moved him up on the rail in cruise control and when they reached the top of the stretch he had just two rivals left in front of him. When one of the two fanned very wide turning into the lane, Kairos sliced between the two and drew of with authority, winning by 4 1/4 lengths. Despite his previous success at the route, he paid $31.60 while earning a check for $17,100.
