Latest Milestone: 500 Winning Races for First Dude
Published: Monday, July 8, 2019

Under normal circumstances, a winner in a $4,000 claiming race isn't worthy of making the news cycle, but not so in the case of Foxy Gator.

The daughter of First Dude breezed in the slop at Mountaineer Casino & Resort yesterday, presenting the stallion with his 500th winning race since his first crop reached the track in 2015, the year Foxy Gator was a 2-year-old. But that's not all concerning the 6-year-old mare bred by Double Diamond Farm.

Foxy Gator began her career in South Florida in the Double Diamond barn, raced there for her first two tries, and was claimed out of the second race for $16,000. She competed in the barn of Hammond Racing for her next four starts, then shipped to Penn National and began campaigning there for the same owners. Amazingly, she remained in the Hammond barn for every succeeding start until this year, when on March 29 she finished seventh in what would be her final race both at Penn National and for Hammond Racing.

On May 6, Foxy Gator showed up at Mountaineer and finished second, earning $2,000 for her new owners, Terry Staley and Charles F. Lugovich. She then found new life, winning for trainer William Hackney on May 14 by 4 1/2 lengths and collecting $4,234; winning again on June 11 by 7 1/4 lengths and earning $5,800, and making it three straight yesterday by an eye-opening 17 lengths and banking another $5,800. That's $17,834 for the four races since coming to the new barn, and a combined total of 28 3/4 lengths for the three victories, all under Wilkin Ortiz. Her career record is 11-7-9 in 52 starts and she has earnings of $131,618.

It was only a $4,000 claimer, but certainly worth the ink.
