Ohtani's Victory Puts First Dude in Florida Lead With 9 winners
Published: Tuesday, February 4, 2020

Ohtani gave First Dude his ninth winner of the new year at Turf Paradise yesterday, most among Florida's active stallions after 34 days of racing.

Ohtani, a 4-year-old bred by Double Diamond, left from the No. 3 post under Chad Lindsay and broke quickly in the six-furlong race, settling on the rail down the backstretch just inside 2-1 favorite Don't Remember. After a sizzling quarter in :22.22, Lindsay let Don't Remember open up by more than a length as they passed the half in :44.64, but when the favorite drifted to mid-track entering the stretch, Ohtani shot through on the inside and easily put away his only rival in the final eighth. Ohtani won by 1 1/2 lengths, clocked in 1:09.73, and it was 7 1/2 lengths back to the third-place finisher. The gelding has finished in the top four in nine of 14 starts.
