As Southern Dudette was extending her lead down the stretch in the fifth race at Delta Downs last night, veteran track announcer Don Stevens put a stamp on her wire-to-wire performance at 6 1/2 furlongs by bellowing, "Southern Dudette is gonna rumble home a big winner in race number 5."
With Alexander Castillo riding, the 3-year-old daughter of First Dude shot out of the gate with 6-1 listed next to her name on the tote board. Just as she passed the first quarter in :23.80, two lengths on top, the board abruptly changed to 3-1.
But Southern Dudette looked more like a 3/5 shot as she lengthened her lead at every pole and went under the wire nearly five lengths in front. The filly bred by Destiny Oaks wound up paying $8.60 while earning a check for $8,400. She's won two of her last three starts.
