Starr of Quality Wins $100,000 Santa Anita Stakes
Published: Sunday, June 23, 2019

Starr of Quality was a heavy choice in the morning line and only three horses showed up to challenge her yesterday in the $100,000 Dream of Summer Stakes at Santa Anita. The 5-year-old daughter of First Dude, bred in California by Donald Dizney, wound up going off at 7/10 in the one-mile race, and she didn't disappoint, reporting home by 1 1/2 lengths and getting her first career stakes victory.

With Tiago Pereira aboard, Starr of Quality sat second behind Coco Kisses, moved off the inside on the backstretch to engage the leader, then went on to score her sixth victory, collecting a check for $60,000. She raised her earnings to $290,659 on a record of 6-4-6 in 23 starts, and she's 2-2-3 in her last eight.

At Canterbury Park, Minnesota-bred Ready to Runaway lived up to her name, running away from the field in a 5 1/2-furlong race that went in 1:05.58 and becoming First Dude's 50th winner of 2019. At prohibitive odds of 1/5, the 3-year-old filly pressed the pace while three wide early, took over at the quarter pole and rolled to a 7 1/4-length victory, earning a check for $9,600. With a record of 2-2-0 after just four starts, and with earnings of $37,550, Ready to Runaway has turned out to be quite a bargain. Buyers missed the boat when she sold for $4,000 at the Minnesota August 2-year-old sale in 2017 and yesterday she was claimed for $25,000.
