Super Ride by Ortiz Sends First Dude Over $2 Million
Published: Monday, July 29, 2019

It took First Dude four months and 17 days to break the $1 million mark in progeny earnings this year. Then it took him just two months and 11 days to pass $2 million.

Super Dude got the job done at Saratoga yesterday, winning at 1 1/8th miles under Irad Ortiz and collecting $35,750, lifting First Dude's total to $2,010,505. In the process, however, the Lady Sheila Stable lost the 5-year-old in a claim for $40,000.

Ortiz sent Super Dude out for the lead from the outside and they were five wide going to the first turn. But the gelding settled into second behind Candy Promises and remained glued to the pacesetter all the way to the final turn. From there it was a nose-to-nose battle to the wire, with Super Dude winning a head bob and paying $9.20.

Super Dude now sports a record of 4-3-2 in just 11 lifetime starts, with earnings of $156,480. He was purchased by Lady Sheila Stable for $200,000 at the OBS March 2-year-old sale in 2016 and raced in their colors ever since, but his career has been limited due to three enforced layoffs of 11 months, 4 months and 3 1/2 months. Now it will take new trainer Randi Persaud to nurse him past the purchase price.
