What's Up Dude 2nd in Lightning Jet Handicap in Chicago
Published: Sunday, November 17, 2019

What's Up Dude became stakes-placed for the second time yesterday, using a powerful run in the last sixteenth of a mile to get up for second in the $55,300 Lightning Jet Handicap at Hawthorne.

With Jareth Loveberry aboard, the 5-year-old Illinois-bred gelding was an unhurried sixth in a seven-horse field, well off the rail, for the first five furlongs of the six-furlong race. The leaders, meanwhile, were setting a sizzling pace up front - :22.09, :45.40 and :57.57.

Loveberry sent What's Up Dude after the the pacesetters with a wide move at the end of the turn, but he made little dent in the margin of about six lengths. At the sixteenth pole, however, the gelding put it in another gear and he flew to the wire, getting up for second in a five-horse photo.

What's Up Dude earned $11,060 and raised his lifetime earnings to $252,746 on a record of 7-6-2 in 29 starts. First Dude is now less than $32,000 from reaching $16 million in career progeny earnings.
