Heading down the backstretch in the third race at Golden Gate Fields yesterday, it appeared as though Wilshire Dude was all through after he gave up the lead he had held since the outset of the 1 1/16ths-mile trip, and dropped back to third. But it turned out the 4-year-old son of First Dude was just playing possum.
On the turn, Kevin Krigger swung the Dizney-bred gelding out to the three path and a mad dash for the wire ensued with five or six horses having a chance to prevail. However, a game Wilshire Dude proved to be best of the group, scoring by one-half length and adding $8,400 to his bank account, which put First Dude over the $3.3 million mark. He's now 3-3-3 in 16 starts with earnings of $60,038. Earlier in the season, Wilshire Dude had won twice in the distinct Dizney colors before being claimed for $35,000.
