In his first start at Gulfstream Park on May 22, Famous Gent suffered a horror trip; banged around like a pinball twice leaving the gate, hit the rail, and steadied. The 2-year-old colt still was able to get up to finish fourth.
The son of First Dude had no such problems yesterday in start No. 2, a $52,500 maiden special at five furlongs. Apprentice Cristian Torres guided him cleanly through the trip and Famous Gent became his sire's first juvenile winner of 2020 and winner No. 30 overall, best by five over three Florida stallions tied for second.
Famous Gent was off fifth, quickly moved into fourth on the backstretch, then went after the leaders with a powerful four-wide move on the turn. At the top of the stretch he had just one rival left and he handled that with ease, winning by three-quarters of a length in :58.87. It was worth $34,250 to Trilogy Stable and Laurie Plesa, his owners and breeders, and $17.20 to his betting faithful.
