First Dude Takes Over Florida Sire Lead
Published: Saturday, February 22, 2020

First Dude is on another streak, getting six winners in the last seven days, and he has moved to a familiar spot - the top of the Florida general sire list in two categories.

Valiant Virtue won at Tampa Bay Downs yesterday, and Caracortada scored at Los Alamitos, giving First Dude progeny earnings of $392,893 since Jan. 1, along with 16 winners, both best for all Florida stallions.

With Jesus Castanon riding in a one-mile starter optional claimer on the turf, Valiant Virtue sat second while Free Dancer hit the first quarter in :22.91. Castanon kept the 3-year-old gelding in the two-path heading into the turn, then the duo swept by the leader with ease and continued on to score by 1 1/2 lengths under wraps. He was clocked in 1:37.11 and earned a check for $13,150, raising his total to $54,700 on a record of 2-1-2 in nine starts.

Caracortada, now six, didn't race at two, three and four, making her first career start on March 31 of last year. She has since posted a record of 3-0-3 in 11 starts with earnings of $33,500, competing in minor company out west. She won by one length with 4 1/2 furlongs in :52.08 and paid $3.40 as favorite.
