Apprentice Rider Gets 2nd Victory Aboard Son of Bahamian Squall
Published: Thursday, April 22, 2021

Sun Squall no doubt greatly benefitted from the presence yesterday of Nicolas Arriagada, who piloted the son of Bahamian Squall to the easiest of victories at Tampa Bay Downs

Arriagada is a 21-year-old apprentice jockey who won his first career race last Friday riding with a 10-pound allowance for his owner/trainer father, Juan Arriagada. Nicolas made it two victories for dad with his score aboard Sun Squall, who carried 113 pounds while the rest in the field were bogged down with 123

Sun Squall broke fifth in the six-furlong race and remained there down the backstretch before going after the leaders coming to the turn after a quarter in :22.39. Arriagada swung the gelding to the middle of the track at the top of the stretch and the 4-year-old literally jogged to the lead, winning in hand by 3 1/4 lengths with a sharp clocking of 1:10.79. Sun Squall paid $4.60 as favorite and earned a check for $10,070, lifting his career total to $77,405 on a record of 3-3-6 in 19 starts. He's 2-1-1 in five tries this year.

Unfortunately for the Arriagada family, they lost Nicolas's second winner through the claiming box.
