Bahamian Squall Colt Defeats 1/2 Favorite in Career Debut
Published: Saturday, August 31, 2019

Based on a fifth-place finish in her career debut, in which she finished 2 1/2 lengths behind the winner, the players at Gulfstream Park yesterday sent the filly Mrs. Maisel off at 1/2 in a $41,800 maiden race against colts. It turned out to be a huge mistake, as she was unable to handle Assertiko, who was impressive while becoming the second winner from the first crop of Bahamian Squall.

Assertiko was sent off at odds of 9/2 in his debut for owners David Romanik, Ron Spatz and SCF Inc. He battled three wide outside Mrs. Maisel from the outset in the five-furlong race that was taken off the grass and moved to the main track. At the top of the stretch, Assertiko edged into the lead and held it all the way to the wire, out-gaming the favorite by one length. The victory was worth $27,800 to the trio of owners, plus a nice breeder's award to SCF.
