Bahamian Squall Filly Wins After Huge Influx of Late Money
Published: Friday, January 15, 2021

When the field for the fifth race at Gulfstream Park yesterday was moving toward the gate, oddly-named Elliereeseaston was sitting on the tote board at odds of 7/2. When the fillies had traveled 100 yards, the 3-year-old daughter of Bahamian Squall suddenly dropped to 6/5.

Elliereeseaston had made just one previous start, finishing fourth by 13 1/2 lengths at odds of 11-1, but sharp-eyed handicappers no doubt noticed the winner scored by 12 3/4 lengths, and Elliereeseaston was just three-quarters of a length from second. She had posted a bullet trial of 47.80 at Palm Meadows, best of 83 who worked half a mile that day.

Tyler Gaffalione sent his filly out quickly from the rail and she settled in fourth place down the backstretch. As the field rounded the turn, he hit the gas pedal and Elliereeseaston easily overtook the leaders and she was in front as they headed down the stretch. She drew off to win by three lengths in 1:12.75 for the six furlongs, giving Bahamian Squall his second January winner. She paid $4.60 and earned $14,100 and a breeder's award for owner Troy Lange.
