'Bargain' Benny Pays Off Big for Ridenjac Racing
Published: Saturday, July 25, 2020

It's difficult to hail any 2-year-old as a 'bargain' after just one race, but at least until he runs again, that's the way Bahamian Benny has to be classified.

In the 2019 OBS October sale, the then-yearling with the all-Double Diamond Farm pedigree sold for a mere $4,000 to Ridenjac Racing. Yesterday, in a $40,000 claimer, he broke his maiden for that same outfit in a Gulfstream Park romp, earning a check for $24,950.

Bred by Michelle Landry, Bahamian Benny is Double Diamond through and through - by Bahamian Squall out of the First Dude mare Hunter Grace. His first try was scheduled to be contested at five furlongs on the turf, but was switched to the main track. Ronnie Allen eased Bahamian Benny away fifth on the inside, but not far off the pace, then let him roll four wide into the stretch. From there to the wire it was no contest, and the gelding coasted home four lengths in front, without the need of much urging.

Bahamian Benny became his sire's seventh winner this year and first of the 2-year-old variety. Despite a recent excellent work of 48 seconds flat breezing from the gate at Palm Meadows, he went off at 12-1 and paid $27.60.
