First Dude Scores From Coast to Coast
Published: Sunday, August 9, 2020

First Dude added his Florida-leading 42nd and 43rd winners to his 2020 ledger yesterday - some 3,000 miles apart. Wilshire Dude, a 5-year-old gelding bred by Don Dizney, won going a mile and one-sixteenth at Del Mar, while Marcelino, a 4-year-old gelding bred by Pedro Maestre, scored racing five furlongs on the turf at Gulfstream Park.

Wilshire Dude, who began his career campaigning in the Dizney barn and was claimed away for $35,000 in February of 2019, has been a target of the claiming trainers ever since, including yesterday following his first victory of this year. With Ricardo Gonzalez aboard, the gelding raced third down the backstretch, coasted up to the leaders on the turn and proved best in the run to the wire, winning by three-quarters of a length. He paid $8.80 while improving his record to 4-5-3 in 22 starts, and the $13,200 winner's check increased his earnings to $84,338.

Marcelino told a much-different story. This was just his third start of 2020 after he was on the sidelines from Feb. 15 to July 18 and he was sent off at 20-1. Angel Rodriguez took him away in fourth place and he was six lengths behind coming to the turn. Marcelino moved on the two leaders approaching the top of the stretch and out-gamed four other rivals to the finish, winning by a neck in :55.48. He lit up the board at $42 and collected a check for $12,600, raising his total to $83,360 on a record of 5-0-5 in 19 tries.

First Dude had dropped to third on Florida's sire list, but moved back within $525 of Brethren with five winners in the span of the last seven days.
