First Dude Widens Leads in Florida Sire Races
Published: Thursday, February 27, 2020

First Dude widened his lead in the two main categories on the Florida general sire list via maiden-breaking victories in Florida by a pair of stretch-running 3-year-olds.

At Tampa Bay Downs, First Homestead made his career debut for owners/breeders Peggy Dellheim and Pete Mattson in a six-furlong test with Raul Mena riding. Mena sent the gelding to the lead out of the gate, but quickly dropped him back to second. After fractions of :23.07 and :46.33, First Homestead went after the pacesetter and used a strong stretch run to get up for a one-length victory in 1:11.45. He paid $19 and collected a check for $8,690.

At Gulfstream Park, Roan Mountain broke his maiden in his third start for Double Diamond Farm, with Luis Reyes aboard. Reyes settled the colt 10 lengths off the pace down the backstretch in the one-mile race, while the leaders put up fractions of :23.20, :45.56 and 1:10.88. The quick pace took its toll and Roan Mountain began to close the gap on the turn. He then uncorked a monster stretch run between horses that picked up six lengths in deep stretch, resulting in a one-length victory and a win payoff of $28.60, plus a winner's check of $12,800, and the breeder's award.

The two victories boosted First Dude's winners' total to 18 good for a six-up lead over all active Florida sires. His progeny earnings jumped to $430,363, opening up a daylight lead in that category, too. The son of Stephen Got Even is just four winning races away from the 600 mark lifetime.
