Icy Dude Remains Cool to Become First Dude's 39th Winner
Published: Thursday, July 23, 2020

When Icy Dude made his 2-year-old debut at Aqueduct back on Nov. 27, Linda Rice must come up with some inside info and claimed him away from Double Diamond Farm for $40,000 on behalf of the Drawing Away Stable.

Under the tutelage of the long-time trainer from Ocala it took four tries for the First Dude gelding to break his maiden, but after a pair of sharp seconds, Icy Dude made it to the winner's circle yesterday in a $26,500 MSW at Finger Lakes.

With Oscar Gomez aboard over an off-track labeled 'good,' Icy Dude was off last in a six-horse field going a mile and 40 yards, and remained there within hailing distance of the leaders down the backstretch. He shot up four wide on the turn and was alongside the pace-setter before being fanned even wider as they hit the top of the stretch. It took a little doing, but Icy Dude drove clear by three lengths in the battle to the wire, and First Dude had winner No. 39 for the year.

The check for $12,900 helped raise First Dude's total to $1,126,140 and gave him a little breathing room in the fight for second place on Florida's general sire list.
