M. J.'s Lady Breaks Her Maiden at Laurel: Holy Toledo!
Published: Saturday, July 25, 2020

M. J.'s Lady's victory in a $41,200 maiden special at Laurel Park yesterday proved to be special in several ways.

(1) - It gave First Dude 40 winners in 2020, six better than Khozan and Brethren among Florida sires.

(2) - It moved First Dude more than $34,000 ahead of Brethren in the battle for second place on the sire list.

(3) - It marked the 1,000th career winner for jockey Jevian Toledo.

In a field of six fillies racing a flat mile over a muddy track, Toledo broke well with M. J.'s Lady, then eased her back into fifth on the backstretch, about five lengths off the leaders. He slipped her through on the inside to close the gap moving into the turn, then guided her between horses at the top of the stretch. M. J.'s Lady took the lead down the lane and held off Ski Bunny by three-quarters of a length, paying $12 and collecting $22,800 for her maiden-breaking victory.
