Mother of Dragons Posts Near-Record Performance at Golden Gate
Published: Monday, June 1, 2020

After her seventh career start, which came at Golden Gate Fields on May 28 of 2018, Andreas Psarras' Mother of Dragons was sent to the sidelines and did not return until this past January, a layoff of one year and seven months.

The stakes-winning daughter of First Dude, now six, posted a pair of thirds in her first three 2020 starts, and won yesterday for the first time in two years in start No. 4 with a near-record performance at Golden Gate. Ridden by Julien Couton, the mare named after the leading lady in the blockbuster HBO series Game of Thrones went wire-to-wire in a $40,000 allowance optional claimer at 5 1/2 furlongs.

After putting up lightning early fractions of :21.64 and :44.93, Mother of Dragons coasted to the wire 1 1/2 lengths in front, clocked in an exceptional 1:03.38, less than one second off the track record of 1:02.41. She paid $3.40 as favorite and earned a check of $18,600 for Psarras, who purchased her for a bargain $3,000 out of the OBS Winter Sale in 2015. The patient owner has now collected $121,495 as the mare bred by Classic Oaks Farm raised her record to 5-1-3 in 11 starts and became First Dude's 29th winner of the year, easily best among Florida's stallions.
