Super Dude Puts First Dude on the Verge of $500,000
Published: Tuesday, March 3, 2020

After briefly losing the lead on Florida's general sire list heading into the weekend, First Dude took it back in spades when Super Dude scored a thrilling victory in a $93,000 allowance optional claimer at Oaklawn Park.

The 6-year-old gelding bred by Moreau Bloodstock International earned a check for $55,800, leaving First Dude just $566 short of reaching the $500,000 mark. Super Dude had become First Dude's 15th runner with earnings in excess of $200,000 when he finished fifth and collected $5,880 in the $200,000 Sunshine Millions Classic at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 18; he was just 2 1/2 lengths behind Noble Drama that day. He now has $258,535 in the bank on a record of 6-4-2 in 17 starts, and moved up to 11th place among First Dude's runners, who are led by Shamrock Rose's $968,962.

Ramon Vasquez left quickly from the rail with Super Dude in the one-mile Oaklawn race while allowing Lenstar to take the early lead. The $200,000 OBS March 2-year-old followed the pacesetter down the backstretch, then went after him on the turn as Rocking the Boat came up three wide and entered the battle. Super Dude lost second place momentarily, but dug in gamely and he and Rocking the Boat dueled all the way to the wire, with Super Dude winning a photo by a head, clocked in 1:37.52.

Super Dude beame his sire's 19th winner this year, and First Dude leads the next three Florida active sires by seven in that category.
