Winners for First Dude and Bahamian Squall - Again
Published: Sunday, February 28, 2021

For the second straight day, Double Diamond's stallions each had a winner, with First Homestead scoring at Tampa Bay Downs and Sierra Diamond at Mahoning Valley.

Ironically, First Homestead had broken his maiden exactly one year and one day ago at Tampa, on Feb. 26. But the 4-year-old First Dude gelding had been unable to repeat that impressive performance in four subsequent tries - until yesterday.

With Jose Ferrer aboard, First Homestead slipped through on the rail to take the lead in a first quarter of :22.89, and continued to set a hot pace through a half in :45.36 and six furlongs in 1:09.81. He reached the wire nearly three lengths in front clocked in 1:16.43 for the 6 1/2 furlongs, less than one second off the track record. He became the 13th winner for First Dude this year, paid $2.80, collected a check for $8,090, and earned a breeder's award for Peggy Dellheim and Pete Mattson.

At Mahoning Valley, Sierra Diamond won for the second time and picked up a check for $12,720. The 3-year-old filly by Bahamian Squall, bred by Donald Dizney, dueled for the lead through a quarter in :23.16 and was never threatened thereafter, winning by 2 1/2 lengths with Fernando Salazar Becerra, who never had to raise his whip for the last eighth of a mile. She paid $14.80 and became the first repeat winner for her sire this year
