With Victory by Fast Dude, First Dude Less Than $41,000 From a Million
Published: Friday, July 3, 2020

With only two runners competing yesterday on a sparse racing day around the country, First Dude still was able to creep a little closer to the $1 million mark in 2020 progeny earnings. At Evangeline Downs, Fast Dude broke his maiden in his sixth start, while at Charles Town, Foxy Gator finished second, and First Dude's earnings jumped to $959,165.

Fast Dude became winner No. 34 for his sire this year under a smart, tactical ride by Diego Saenz. The 3-year-old gelding, off at odds of 4-1, broke sharply in the one-mile race and Saenz settled him in the three path, just off the pace set by 3/5 Mythajacul. On the turn, Fast Dude went after the favorite and from there it was just the two of them all the way to the wire, with Fast Dude prevailing by three-quarters of a length. He paid $10.60 and helped First Dude to the tune of $6,600.

The previous evening, Ready to Runaway's unbeaten streak in stakes at Canterbury Park came to an end when the 4-year-old filly finished second by a neck in the $50,000 Minnesota Turf Distaff Stakes at 7 1/2 furlongs on the grass. Ready to Runaway had won all four of her previous stakes engagements, but she was unable to do anything about Firstmate, who found an opening on the rail in mid-stretch and was able to get up at the wire for the victory. The clocking of 1:28.56 is less than three-fifths of a second off the course record of 1:28 set in 1995.

Ready to Runaway collected $9,350 for second while protecting her perfect in-the-money record - she's 6-4-3 in 13 starts with earnings of $250,780.
