Apprentice Yolber Torres looked more like an old pro than a rider who has won only 37 races as he guided Plum Irish to her maiden-breaking score at Gulfstream Park on Sunday.
In a race at five furlongs over the Tapeta surface, the 3-year-old Bahamian Squall filly was making her fourth start and had the advantage of carrying just 112 pounds. Torres sent her out quickly and Plum Irish settled in on the rail, just behind the leader. On the turn, Torres slipped her through on the inside and the filly bred by Ocala veterinarian Rod Lundock took the lead entering the stretch and held it all the way to the wire, winning by 1 1/2 lengths in :57.24.
Plum Irish paid $16.20 and earned a check for $20,100, boosting her total to $32,710 on a record of 1-2-0 in her four tries.
