Steel City Dude Moves Way Up on Main Track

First Dude’s winners often come in bunches, and when Steel City Dude became his 56th winner of 2021 yesterday at Gulfstream Park, it marked the seventh winner’s circle visit for the stallion’s runners in the span of 11 days.

Despite a series of solid morning trials, the 2-year-old gelding owned and bred by J. J. Brevan Stable didn’t care for the turf in an unsuccessful debut  for trainer David Fawkes, so yesterday he was switched to a flat mile over the main track. Emisael Jaramillo sent him out quickly and Steel City Bridge was head-and-head for the lead in a :23.96 quarter, racing in the two path.

As they passed the half in :47.05, Jaramillo urged his mount to the lead and Steel City Dude opened up by three lengths coming to the top of the stretch. He held off a minor challenge by the even-money favorite, and went on to score by 1 1/2 lengths in 1:39.40. He paid $10.40 and earned a check for $16,260.
