First Dude: Two More Winners, 18 for Sunset Paula Jo

First Dude has picked up two more winners so far this week and he now has seven in January, tied with Khozan for first place in the early going among Florida’s sires. Too Much Vino became No. 7 at Gulfstream Park on Wednesday, preceded by Sunset Paula Jo’s 18th career victory at Camarero in Puerto Rico on Monday.

Too Much Vino made a huge three-wide move on the turn under Emma-Jayne Wilson and ran away and hid down the lane, scoring by 7 1/4 lengths with 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:06.15. The 3-year-old filly bred by Flying Finish Farm paid $4.20 as favorite, breaking her maiden after posting four straight second-place efforts. She earned $12,800 for the victory.

Sunset Paula Jo, who ran up an eight-race winning streak from 2021 into 2022, has won two in a row, both behind Equibase ‘E’ speed figures of 101. The 8-year-old mare scored by a length and a quarter in the mud, getting six furlongs in 1:12.45. The $1,200 OBS August yearling of 2016 bred by Maria Montez Haire has compiled an imposing record of 18-4-5 in 50 starts, most victories among all of First Dude’s runners. She boosted her earnings to $204,257 and moved into her sire’s $200,000-plus club at No. 22.
