When Calypso Moon made her debut under Jose Morelos in a maiden special at Gulfstream Park on Dec.20, she was sent off at 57-1 and finished fifth, beaten less than four lengths. And, in the 80-degree weather, after the finish the daughter of Bahamian Squall collapsed of apparent heat exhaustion, but subsequently was able to walk back to the barn.
Fast forward 3 1/2 weeks. Trainer Eddie Plesa has Dr. Rod Lundock’s 3-year-old filly ready to go again, this time in a $50,000 maiden optional claimer at five furlongs on the grass, and this time Morelos shoots her to the lead. Calypso Moon puts up fractions of :21.74 and :44.19 and reaches the wire one length in front, clocked in :56.26. She paya $10.80 and collects a check for $29,300 for the retired veterinarian, plus a breeder’s award.
