Breaking News: Glitter Star Stakes Goes to First Dude Mare 4 Years in a Row

Last year, at the age of five, Minnesota-bred Ready to Runaway achieved one of the rare accomplishments in thoroughbred racing – winning the same stakes race three years in succession. Last night, at Canterbury Park, the daughter of First Dude made it four in a row, defeating stablemate Clickbait by a half a length in the $50,000 Glitter Star Stakes.

Ready to Runaway and Clickbait, both residing in the barn of owner John Mentz, have been trading punches – and favoritism – for several years. Last night it was Ready to Runaway’s turn; she went off at 6/5, 10 cents lower than her stablemate. New rider Ry Eikleberry put her on the lead and she was never headed, getting the mile and a sixteenth in 1:46.18. She paid $4.40 and earned a check for $30,000.

Ready to Runaway remained in fifth place on First Dude’s leading money-winner list with earnings of $541,085 as she added to her fabulous record – 14-7-3 in 27 starts. Not too shabby considering Mentz purchased her for $4,000 as an August yearling in Minnesota.
