El Zopilote Picks Them Clean at Laurel

The English translation of El Zopilote is “The Buzzard,” and the First Dude colt of the same name picked them clean in the ninth race at Laurel Park yesterday.

With Maclovio Enrique Jr. riding, the 4-year-old bred by Red Oak Stable was off well in the 5 1/2-furlong race, settling into fourth place down the backstretch. Coming to the turn, Enrique sent El Zopilote wide and he collared the leaders nearing the top of the stretch, took command at the sixteenth pole, then drew off with authority to score his second career victory.

The $8,000 OBS Winter yearling won by two lengths and paid $12.60. He earned a check for $11,220, increasing his total to $42,888 in 13 starts, an average of $3,300 per race.
