Equine Ohtani Shines; Not So Much for Ballplayer

Tuesday, Sept. 13, was a good day for one of the Ohtanis, the equine version. Twenty-eight-year-old Los Angeles Angels’ slugger and pitcher Shohei Ohtani went 0-for-3 as his team lost to the Cleveland Guardians; Ohtani, the 6-year-old First Dude gelding bred by Donald Dizney won at Assiniboia Downs and raised his record to 6-3-7 in 42 starts.

Tyrone Nelson was aboard the equine Ohtani, who was off fourth on the inside in the race at 5 1/2 furlongs. The gelding was six lengths off the pace down the backstretch, began to close the gap on the turn, swung to mid-track for the stretch run and was up in the final jump for a head victory in 1:07.60. It was his first score this year and No. 44 for First Dude. With the meager purses at Assiniboia, Ohtani earned $6,000 in Canadian funds ($4,621 US) and increased his total to $63,842. He paid $28.20.
