Hay Hay Paula: From Last to First, But Without the Call

Hay Hay Paula came from so far back, and was so late, that track announcer Pete Aiello didn’t have enough time to give her the old “from last to first” call in the sixth race at Gulfstream Park yesterday.

With Emisael Jaramillo aboard in the 5 1/2-furlong test over the Tapeta surface, the 5-year-old daughter of Bahamian Squall lunged leaving the gate and was away dead last in the eight-horse field. She was out of the TV picture until the camera picked her up closing the gap and swinging five wide on the turn, but she still was no factor passing the sixteenth pole. From there she closed like a rocket and nailed 3/5 favorite Spicy Ginger by half a length in the last jump.

Hay Hay Paula, bred by Paamela Edel, was clocked in 1:05.07 and paid $8, with the $14,700 winner’s check increasing her earnings to $63,540 on a record of 3-0-2 in nine starts. She became winner No. 7 for Bahamian Squall since Jan. 1, and left him less than $80,000 from reaching the $3 million mark in career progeny earnings.
