Ready to Runaway Draws Closer to $600,000

With Canterbury Park’s summer meeting having come to a close, Ready to Runaway left her favorite oval for Chicago and finished third in a $47,120 allowance optional claimer at Hawthorne in her first try over the track.

The 6-year-0ld Minnesota-bred daughter of First Dude has been a cash cow for owner John Mentz since he purchased her for $4,000 from breeder Wildcat Ranch at the 2017 Minnesota August yearling sale. A multiple stakes-winner, Ready to Runaway has run up an unmatched record of 14-8-4 in 29 starts. The $4,180 check for third in her most recent race raised her career total to $564,640, and she’s the fifth highest money-winner for her sire. She was no match for 1/2 favorite Oeuvre in the race at six furlongs, but finished well to fall short of second by half a length.

At Arapahoe Park, Gran Edition made it three victories in his four starts in Colorado with 1 1/2-length victory for owner/trainer Juan Chavez. The 5-year-old son of First Dude, a $7,000 OBS October yearling bred by Ponder Hill, raced a mile in 1:41.11 under Danny Aguilar and the check for $5,400 lifted his total to $42,775 on a record of 5-2-6 in 29 starts. Despite an 8 1/2-length score two races back, he still paid $15.80.
