Sun Squall Puts Bahamian Squall on the Verge of $1 Million

By 8 p. m. this evening, Bahamian Squall may have passed the $1 million mark in progeny earnings for the first time. It’s all up to Free to Run, who is 9/2 in the morning line for the third race at Mountaineer Casino & Racetrack. With a purse of just under $8,000, the gelding will have to win to earn enough for his sire to reach the million.

Sun Squall is the gelding who put Bahamian Squall on the threshold of his milestone with an eye-catching, come-from-behind victory at Prairie Meadows yesterday. Alberto Pusac was aboard the 5-year-old bred by Sunshine Thorougbred Corp. in the race at five furlongs. Sun Squall broke last from the No. 9 post, but Pusac quickly rushed him up three wide on the backstretch. He accelerated on the turn, made up six lengths from mid-stretch home, and was up by a neck in the last jump, clocked in :58.82.

Sun Squall, a $50,000 OBS April 2-year-old, paid $11.80 for his second victory in his last three tries, and boosted his record to 5-6-7 in 31 starts. The $7,770 winner’s check increased his bank account to $112,880, and Bahamian Squall’s earnings rose to $996,335.
