With apologies to the Thoroughbred Daily News, which introduced its TDN Rising Star concept to the racing world, Double Diamond Farm has a rising star of its own. She’s the 3-year-old filly Little Opal, who is 3-for-3 after her wire to-wire score in the Gr. III John C. Harris Stakes at about 6 1/2 furlongs over the downhill turf course at Santa Anita.

Little Opal (Carvaggio-Il Mulino, by Elusive Quality) was sent off at 6/5 in the $102,000 Harris under former Gulfstream Park jockey Emisael Jaramillo, who had ridden her in both her previous starts. He put her on the lead at the break and she passed the poles in :22, :44.34 and 1:06.77, then held off her rivals by 1 1/4 lengths at the wire in a final time of 1:12.76. She paid $4.40, earned a check for $60,000, and received an Equibase ‘E’ speed figure of 102.

In her first start in an $81,500 maiden special on July 24 at Del Mar, Little Opal also wired the field, winning by 1 1/2 lengths. She sped five furlongs on the grass in :55.95, a little over one second off the course record. The winner’s check for Double Diamond was $48,000.

In start No. 2 at Del Mar, in an $83,200 allowance optional claimer, also at five furlongs on the turf, Little Opal won by 2 1/2 lengths, getting the distance in :56.04. She paid $4 and collected a check for $48,600.

Her total earnings for three outings is $156,600.

Little Opal’s dam, Il Mulino, also produced Cucina for Double Diamond in 2017. The stakes-placed gelding went 7-9-11 in 58 starts with earnings of $280,254.
